Okay, so the idea of a church wedding turns you off.  The thought of getting wrapped up in a wedding dress and doing your hair up just so sends you screaming into the night.  The last person that suggested “The Wedding Song” or “Endless Love” for your ceremony is expected to be released from the hospital next week.  In short, you have zero inclination to do things the way they have always been done.

No worries.  One of the great things about a wedding is the notion of doing it in a manner that suits your lifestyle and personality.  Whether it is getting married barefoot on a beach or diving out of an airplane together, the only limits to your wedding are found in your imagination.

One couple decided to give out lottery tickets to all their wedding guests, valued at a buck apiece.  They were accompanied by a note in the program stating that they were so lucky to have all of them as friends and wanted to return the favor.  Of course any substantial winnings would be shared with the bride and groom!

Another couple opted out of the tired tradition known as the “guestbook”, which is signed only to be promptly forgotten and never looked at again, in favor of a photo guestbook, with each guest bringing a photo of themselves to sign and place in the book.   Bingo….and instant photo album representing all of the guests at their wedding.  Definitely something to revisit in years to come!

One bride and groom threw out the traditional church music in favor of a rock and roll theme, with rock music and memorabilia decorating the wedding hall, transforming the site into a pretender to the Hard Rock Café throne.

A recent second marriage involving children from previous relationships made it a point of including the children in the ceremony and placing pictures of all of them around the reception hall, making the statement that this was not just the union of two people, but the formation of a completely new family.

One groom who prefers short and baseball hats had his tux altered into shorts along with a custom made baseball cap that says I DO on one side and JUST MARRIED on the other.

For weddings with older folks whose parents may be deceased, the act of lighting candles in their memory ensures that those who have passed are in fact, there for you at this time.

Normally the ushers or best man escorts the mothers from the chapel, but in some weddings, the bride and groom come back in and escort their parents out.  I wish I had thought of this one!

One couple turned their guestbook into an engraving tray, with guests engraving their name instead of signing a book.  Again, a nice decorative piece that people may actually look at in the future.

Many times people will look at the groomsmen or bridesmaids and wonder what their relationship is to the happy couple.  Consider putting brief bios, accompanied by a small photo, in your program, mentioning who they are and their relationship to you and your spouse.

This author and his wife did something unusual at our wedding by allowing the bridesmaids to pick out their own dresses, the only requirement being a certain color.  Then instead of paying for a dress for a one-time event, they had something they could wear over and over again.

One couple recognized that children are by and large bored at wedding events, so they had a special children’s table set up at their reception with coloring books, arts, and crafts to keep the kids occupied during all of that stuffy adult conversation.

Want to blow some more traditional minds?  Forget the whole “give the bride away” thing and let the bride and groom walk to the aisle together.  I’m not sure who decided the aisle thing was the bride’s moment anyway.

One couple found the garter toss grossly unfair, and decided instead to give out garters to all the single women in the wedding party, along with their wishes for good luck and a happy life.

As you can see, the only limits on your wedding day are found with your imagination.  Dream a little bit….okay, dream a lot! And let your wedding be one that you will truly remember even in your sunset years.

The choice can be very personal but you will need to plan it ahead of time, as it will greatly affect your choice for other items needed in your wedding.

For instance, you choose to have a beach wedding, it may require you and your guests to walk on the beach bare foot. You will need to inform your guests about that.
